When looking for the best LCD monitor, there are many technical and aesthetic issues to consider.  Monitors are available in all colors, shapes and sizes.  They come from a sizeable array of manufacturers and all are subtly different.  Will the monitor work with your PC? Will it look beautiful in the position it is to be used?  Will it have the required ability to display the programs you are going to use on your PC?  Is it good value for money?  You must address these considerations.

If we handle the issues one at a time, firstly let us consider the subject of will the monitor run with your PC.  Most LCD computer monitors will run with most computers – it is simply a matter of verifying that you have the right cables.  In some cases you may need to get extra pieces of equipment to convert one cable into another, but more often than not most monitors will operate correctly with nearly all PCs.  You can do some research online to affirm that you will get the right cable for your computer – but in general  if they are in roughly a comparable vintage they should operate together. You can ordinarily ascertain what video inputs your monitor will take and substantiate that on-line as you make your purchase to get the best picture possible from your monitor.   It should be mentioned that this does not apply to the Apple which tends to have unique demands and in general should be bought as a package – monitor and computer in concert.

When considering how the monitor will appear, attempt to obtain an image or a description of the monitor and envisage it in the room you intend to utilize the computer.  Will it look pleasing – is it really too big, too narrow, a poor color or style for the room?  Look for items like 'cabinet color' and size and weight to give you a good feel.  Obviously this is a personal taste – and as you are the person laying out the money hopefully you will like the choice you make.

When examining the issue of will it have enough 'power' to be used for the applications you wish to view on it then you need to consider what you are intending to be doing on the computer.  The majority of monitors will be good enough for the vast majority of computer applications.  Nevertheless, if you are primarily into games or movies then you should look at the resolution, contrast and brightness. Similar to your TV each of these aspects impacts picture quality.  Generally speaking the higher the better for resolution, contrast and brightness.  It is fundamental to notice that the regular monitor sold is extremely good – so unless you are one of those individuals who obsess over insignificant details, nearly all of the commonly available LCD computer monitors will be good enough.

Value for money is a hard concept to define.  What I think is great value may not necessarily appeal to the next person in a similar manner.  If you go to the big online stores they often have PC monitor reviews by customers available for you to check out and get additional help to make sure you are getting the best LCD monitor at a fair price.  By and large, find the highest quality you are able to afford – because in the long run it pays for itself time and time again.  Many individuals are happy to pay a premium to have the right brand name or the most recent specs and there is not anything wrong with that approach.  Even so my approach has invariably been to make sure I'm protected if it doesn't work by making sure it has a warranty and to obtain the biggest size monitor I can afford.  Computer monitors are in a highly predatory market – so the difference between a 'brand' name and a less famous brand is normally not that large anyway and you can often get good LCD monitor deals.  There is usually a large difference between the price of the different sized monitors.  People do get refurbished LCD monitors from time to time – but I don't think that I would take that risk personally.....

The best LCD monitor, in my opinion, is the biggest LCD monitor that satisfies your specific requirements.  The previous considerations are each valid and contribute to the decision, but to me its important that you make sure you obtain the largest monitor that will fit your other necessities that you can afford.  It is no fun squinting all day into miniscule writing - or needing to scroll about to squash your page on the computer screen.
